Overview of Honorary Degrees

The conferral of an honorary doctorate is a significant recognition at Cedarbrook University. This prestigious award celebrates exceptional achievements in academic and societal realms that reflect the university's core values. Honorary degrees are awarded to individuals whose accomplishments inspire and lead our graduates, exemplifying excellence and high standards.

Selection Criteria for Recipients

The Honorary Degrees Committee uses specific criteria when evaluating candidates. Each year, the Committee aims to recommend a diverse group of honorees from various academic disciplines and notable non-academic fields. The selection of recipients aligns with the purpose of the Convocation during which the degrees will be awarded. Ideally, the majority of honorees will fall into the following categories:

  • Exemplary Contributions in Relevant Fields: Preference is given to individuals who have significantly advanced knowledge and practice in the sciences, humanities, and professional areas aligned with the university’s strengths.
  • Impact on Culture and Society: Recognition will be awarded to those whose remarkable achievements have enriched culture and society in Canada and globally.
  • Contributions to Cedarbrook University: The university may also honor individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to its development, the regional community, or those who have achieved international standards of excellence.

Reporting Recommendations

The Honorary Degrees Committee will submit a written report detailing its recommendations to the Senate. This report will be provided to Senate members at least two days before the Ordinary Meeting where it will be discussed.

The names of candidates proposed for honorary degrees will remain confidential until the Senate grants approval and candidates have accepted the honor.

Documentation Requirements

Nominations that lack the following documents will be returned to the nominator:

  • A letter from the nominator outlining the reasons for the nomination, highlighting the nominee's contributions and achievements, along with any additional pertinent information.
  • Up to three letters of support.
  • An abridged curriculum vitae of the nominee, including educational background, professional field, publications (if applicable), notable awards, and distinguished service.
  • A brief biographical summary (maximum 200 words) to be used for the citation at the Convocation if the nominee is selected.
Ceremony and Presentation

Honorary degree recipients are invited to deliver the Convocation address, although they may decline. Degrees are not awarded in absentia or posthumously, except in cases where the nominee has accepted the honor and arrangements for its conferral were made before their passing.

The citation for the honorary degree must be concise, lasting no more than three minutes. According to Council Bylaws, each honorary degree recipient will be presented for admission to the degree by the Director or a designated representative.

Revocation of Degrees

The Senate has the authority to revoke an honorary degree and all associated rights and privileges. Revocation may occur upon the recommendation of the Honorary Degrees Committee and will require a vote by the Senate.

Degree Certificates and Notifications

Upon receiving an honorary doctorate, recipients will be given a degree certificate, presented during the Convocation ceremony or mailed afterward. If a recipient does not receive their certificate within three months post-ceremony, they must inform the university to avoid a replacement fee.

Recipients of awards from the Department for Continuing Education will receive an official certificate from that department.

Electronic copies, PDFs, or scanned versions of certificates cannot be issued.

Requesting Replacement Certificates

If a doctorate degree certificate is lost, stolen, or damaged, recipients may order a replacement at a nominal cost. Recipients are permitted to hold only one copy of their certificate at any time; multiple requests cannot be fulfilled.
